For more than a decade, Jan Vormann has used LEGOs to craft “dispatchwork” for centuries-old structures, public spaces across the globe, and other eroded areas. Within these pieces, which take hours and hours to create, he hides passageways and windows that ignite the imagination. The multi-colored blocks can sometimes have a glitch-like effect, when activating otherwise everyday spaces. These projects have appeared in Korea, various parts of the U.S., his native Berlin, and beyond.
Raymond Girard has said that his LEGO constructions are created to “express the modern absence of community in city-shaping” and that the plastic represents how cities are no longer built to last. He recently brought this project to Akasha Art Projects, and with "Block Party: The Art of Legometropolitan," he created a site-specific installation. Laird Kay's "aerial" photographs are a key component to Laird's LEGO-filled exhibitions, with a tapestry also created just for this showing, which runs through Dec. 22.
