“The artist creates an imaginary world to talk about what inspires him most, our society both globally and humanly,” one statement says, as translated. “Using a precise technique, he manages to distort the subject while maintaining all the peculiarities in order to keep the objective power of the elements constructing the narration of the painting.”

You may recognize So Youn Lee from our posts about her ethereal pen drawings and candy-colored paintings. Her new work is progressively character based- following a young space explorer named “Mango” through strange environments that echo childhood memories. At her Los Angeles studio, she sketches daily and experiments with motifs, from the abstract shapes of Korean folk textiles to the hyper-real balloons of Jeff Koons.  A Japanese art influence is definitely there as well. Among Lee’s favorite artists are Aya Takano and Yoshitomo Nara, and she is an avid Manga reader. Most of the pieces shown here were created as an exercise, but seem to have left a lasting impression. We went behind the scenes to learn more about So Youn Lee’s new direction and her future plans.

Beau White’s Creepy-Crawly New Oil Paintings

Just in time for Halloween, the new oil paintings of Beau White are as unsettling as they are absorbing. For this set, the Melbourne-based artist adds new layers to his work by integrating food and sweets alongside his gruesome faces. In a new group show at BeinArt Gallery in Australia, titled “Memento Mori, Memento Amare,” his latest work is collected. Isbael Peppard and Jonathan Guthmann also have pieces in the show.

Cemal Eker’s Mythical Drawings

Cemal Eker’s hyperdetailed, mythical drawings carry a supernatural energy. Using both stippling and bold linework, the artist crafts absorbing scenes, worthy of close inspection. And at times, Eker also uses digital techniques to add yet another surreal flourish to the works.
