Stephanie Corr Gartanutti’s Whimsical Wire Sculptures

Stephanie Corr Gartanutti started as a painter, but after multiple sclerosis had diminished her fine motor skills for a period, she began to use sculpting as method to both create and cope. Each of her figures begins with a single piece of wire, and then "the wire is cut, shaped and fastened to itself. Then repeated again and again. Later in the process the wire will be woven through until it becomes a substantial object, that can be further manipulated and cut into shape."

“Weaving and manipulating wire into figures became therapeutic as well as gratifying,” the artist says. “The metal is a natural medium for the subject matter being conveyed and became my sole focus for the last two decades.”

Troy Coulterman's resin sculptures evoke the vibrant colors and over-the-top expressions of animations and graphic novels. The Canadian artist (who was featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 27) recently debuted an exhibition in his hometown, Regina, Saskatchewan, at the MacKenzie Art Gallery. Titled "Digital Handshake," the show takes inspiration from the abstract ways we communicate online. In the candy-colored sculptures, figures appear to dissolve into pixel-like blocks. In the show's centerpiece, a man and a woman are separated by an abstract mass — perhaps a metaphor for the barrier we put between ourselves and the world as we increasingly opt for digital experiences over physical ones.
Paolo Grassino’s strange sculptural creatures teeter between organic and manmade forms. Using both contemporary synthetic materials and elements such as iron and wax, his contemplative inhabit spaces across the world. Further, some of the Italian's figurative works appears as though it's still coming into form, rather than already realized.
Now on view at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles, Johnny 'KMNDZ' Rodriguez and Nicola Verlato's dual exhibitions paint uniquely personal pictures of conflict. There is no universal definition of what it means to struggle; whether we are emotionally conflicted with ourselves, or there is some form of friction between cultural groups, as in Verlato's works.
