Lori Nelson’s “Coming of Age” and Moki’s “No Place Like Home”

Brooklyn based artist Lori Nelson and German artist Moki Mioke, who goes by "Moki", illustrate different ideas of 'strangeness' in their art. For Nelson, this is embodied by her characters' physical appearance, while Moki finds it in her surroundings. The two artists will exhibit together at the Cotton Candy Machine gallery in Brooklyn on September 11th. For her exhibition titled "Coming of Age", Lori Nelson expands on her cast of young monster-movie inspired subjects covered in hair and scales. Like one of horror's most famous characters, the monster of Frankenstein, Nelson's are also perpetually misunderstood.

Like one of horror’s most famous characters, the monster of Frankenstein, Nelson’s are also perpetually misunderstood. They are not so different from normal, human children, born into innocence in spite of how “freakish” or different they look. In dramatically lit oil paintings, we watch as they experience the insecurity, fear and isolation that are often felt with coming of age.

Moki has varied artistic styles that span from detailed and surreal acrylic paintings to more graphical works, where strange beings also dwell. For her latest series, “No Place Like Home”, she says, “I am looking for places that are good for hiding, where you feel secure and safe, where you can disappear or return home. Where you can be invisible.” Drawn in black line on wood verneer, her subjects appear in a state of migration as they are carrying all of their belongings. The reason for their displacement in unclear, as Moki is focused more on the journey. Along the way, she depicts rugged settlers huddled together, an elephant saddled with blankets, and makeshift shelters such as treehouses, a recurring image in her work. Those unfazed by blood, guts and slime will enjoy Arik Roper and Skinner's two-man show, "New Maps of the Abyss," opening this evening at Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn. Skinner (featured in our Hi-Fructose Collected 3 Box Set) is a Oakland-based artist and illustrator whose love of heavy metal and comic books is apparent in his mixed-media work. For "New Maps of the Abyss," he created an extensive series of acrylic and ink pieces on board. Each neon-hued painting features a different demonic character from Skinner's personal underworld.
Where else might one be able to acquire a Mark Ryden piece for $100? The annual Tiny Trifecta group show at Brooklyn's Cotton Candy Machine debuted last Saturday, June 14, to an eager crowd — some of whom, according to co-owner Sean Leonard, had been camping out for several days. Curated by artist and CCM co-owner Tara McPherson, the group show featured three works each from over 100 contemporary artists — well-known figures like Marco Mazzoni, Shepard Fairey and Amy Sol, and emerging artists such as Fefe Talavera and Diana Sudyka. With the walls practically wall-papered with the array of work, the show offers a diverse sampling of fun pieces, from the illustrative to the abstract.
In her signature style that blends magic realism with storybook illustration, American painter Lori Nelson explores the mysterious, frightening, and undeniably magical world of teens in "Cryptotweens Are Like". Her new series of oil-on-panel paintings depicts monstrous tweens and teens that, on the surface, bear little resemblance to ordinary youths. Nelson's "cryptotweens" trek through dark forests alongside animal companions, are covered in fur and scales, and seem to harness their powers through their smart phones (okay, maybe that last one sounds like your average teen).
Slimy skeletons find themselves captive in dark dungeons in Charlie Immer's latest drawings and paintings. The artist (featured in HF Vol. 11) renders sinewy textures and jelly-like consistencies to make his viewers squirm. Immer currently has a show with Paul Pope on view at Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn through January 4. The exhibition features several new dark yet fluorescent paintings as well as a rare look at his drawings on paper.
