Bik Ismo’s Startling ‘Chrome’ Murals

Puerto Rico-born muralist Bik Ismo is known for, among other imagery, crafting chrome figures and objects on walls across the world. Playing with “reflective” surfaces and light, the artist is able to create startling illusions. This sensibility has brought the artist’s hand to recent projects in Taiwan, Belgium, New Zealand, and Dubai.

“Among his achievements are being the artist who organized the first exhibition of graffiti on canvas in Puerto Rico, entitled “Virtuosos of Aerosol (Enlaces Gallery, San Juan, PR, 2002),” a statement by Paint Israel says, “and be the first to organize an exhibition of urban art in Puerto Rico, entitled “Exhibition” (Enlaces Gallery, San Juan, PR, 2003). These exhibitions opened their doors to other urban artists so they could present their work in more formal settings.”

While it's tempting to call what Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada does "street art," his Terrestrial Series isn't experienced in quite the same way as a mural. He recently unveiled two gigantic pieces — one in San Antonio, Texas and one in Paris — that can only be comprehended fully from a bird's eye view. Viewers on the ground have a unique access point of being able to walk through the portraits, which form a cohesive whole only from above.

Kent Twitchell Repaints His “Freeway Lady” Mural 41 Years Later

12 years after artist Kent Twitchell painted Los Angeles' favorite "Freeway Lady" overlooking the 101 freeway, it was erased by a billboard company. Originally painted in 1974, the mural is a tribute to the artist's grandmother who lived in Hollywood. She is depicted holding a colorful, handmade afghan blanket that she gifted to Twitchell. In Hi-Fructose Vol. 37, we caught up with Twitchell during the piece's restoration, which was recently completed on October 10th.

Los Angeles based artists and friends Bumblebee Loves You (featured here) and KETS recently completed a mural that unites their aesthetics of 'graffiti' and 'street art'. Bumblebee incorporates social messages into his stencil graffiti and street installations, while KETS represents with spray-painted graffiti. The image is of a bee-striped boy playing with his toy train next to tracks alongside the 110 freeway.
