New Frances Goodman Show Explores Female Identity, Autonomy

Two pieces below from the show, “Hopelessly Devoted…” and “Wide-Eyed,” have sequins applied to canvas. Her writhing and more abstract sculptures are constructed with fake nails.

“For the purposes of the exhibition, the surface not only refers to the skin, it also alludes to the way a woman presents herself to the world, the image she wishes to portray and the lengths she will go to maintain and perfect the exterior; whilst the ‘beneath’ is both the flesh and bones under the skin as well as the complexity of character and the time, effort and exertion that goes into the ‘making’ of a woman,” a statement says.

In this show, Goodman has taken quilting, embroidery, crochet, and other traditionally domestic activities and “in keeping with historical and present feminist craft art practices, subverted them.”

This is the gallery’s second show with Goodman. The show kicks off on Oct. 26 and runs through Dec. 23 at the New York City gallery.

Ellen Jewett, a self-described “sculpture artist and animal sympathizer,” crafts surreal scenes, taking inspiration from the natural world. Never one to shy away from the macabre, artist and graphic designer Hedi Xandt is known in art circles for his beautifully ghoulish sculptural pieces, which often incorporate elements of the human skeleton. His fascination with skulls and the human profile has led to a series of busts reminiscent of classical Hellenic Greek art. Taking inspiration from ancient Gods and beauties carved in marble, Xandt transforms these figures of perfection to align with his own dark vision.
Salman Khoshroo builds figures out of electric wire, with the resulting character being made for both close inspection and movement. His reflections show the ties between the human machine and the manmade machine. And his kinetic sculptures, in particular, tell of the inherent ability for motion in both of these.
Brooklyn-based, Michigan-raised artist Gary Mellon crafts wood sculptures that are conceived first in his sketchbook. Mellon adds pops of color with acrylic paint, though in much of his work, the natural poplar tones dominate the figures, faces, and totems constructed by the artist. Mellon’s ornate busts seem to blend notes from art history, from Roman influences to contemporary, pop style.
