Miami Art Week 2014: Street Art Highlights from Wynwood

Interesni Kazki detail While the collectors were busy at the fairs during Miami Art Week, street artists descended upon the Wynwood neighborhood to add new murals to the urban landscape, with thousands of eager tourists with cameras at the ready following not far behind. While many murals from past years have been preserved, we spotted new additions by the likes of Interesni Kazki, Nychos (who painted five separate walls), Faith47, Alexis Diaz, Swoon, Cleon Peterson, and many others. Colorful new pieces spilled out of the designated Wynwood Walls area and into the neighborhood. Several artists, such as Pixel Pancho, So Youn Lee, Nychos, and Bikismo, painted at the Jose de Diego Middle School, where, as we learned, arts funding has recently been cut. Originally hailing from Australia, now based in Los Angeles, David "Meggs" Hooke creates explosive figurative works and murals using bright colors and raw textures. For his upcoming solo at Beyond Eden Art Fair in Los Angeles, Meggs looked beyond his usual comic book and mythological influences and turned to his natural environment. Titled "Paving Paradise", his exhibit looks at the duality of our relationship between nature and that which is man-made. "It questions our effect on the planet's rapidly diminishing natural resources, and where our values lie as living beings on this planet," he told Hi-Fructose in a recent studio visit.

We recently spotted Aryz's massive wall at the We AArt mural festival in Denmark (see our coverage here) and shortly after, the prolific Spanish artist traveled to Vilnius, Lithuania to paint a new mural for the Vilnius Street Art Festival. Aryz took an atypical route in the creation of this piece: though it appears geometrically organized and precise, he painted the mural without sketching out his idea prior to coming to the wall. Before he arrived, the wall already had the words “Kaip Ne Žmogus” (or, "Not Like Human") tagged on it. Aryz incorporated the text into his piece, and it seems to fittingly describe this otherworldly scene.

Last week, from February 9th through 14th, artists from all over the world gathered once again in Honolulu for the 5th annual Pow! Wow! Hawaii mural festival. This year's festival was the biggest to date, with 42 visiting artists and 39 local artists all busting out walls in Kaka'ako (the festival hub) and around the city. The week was a convergence of varying cultures and artistic styles, resulting in many exciting collaborations —some planned and others spontaneous.

Cannon Dill Paints His Largest Mural to Date in Oakland

Cannon Dill (previously featured here) recently completed his largest mural to date in Oakland, California. The mural is a part of the Artist Initiative Project that features murals by local artists, curated by bay area gallery Athen B. Gallery and VSCO. Dill's is located on the side of an office that provides services to people renting and buying homes, which inspired him to create a sense of community.
