Hi-Fructose recently caught up with Philadelphia-based artist Nosego as he prepares for his upcoming solo show at Thinkspace Gallery. The exhibition, entitled “Open Channels,” opens July 19 and will feature several new paintings as well as mixed media sculpture.

Manifested through imagery of fierce animals breaking through bizarre contraptions, the artist explains that his latest series expands upon the theme of focusing one’s inner strength to overcome life’s hurdles and evolve through past experiences. An accomplished street artist and videogame designer, Nosego’s fine art paintings feature an amalgamation of his interests as elements such as graffiti characters and cartoons are infused into brightly colored, fanciful scenes. By juxtaposing these familiar images with abstract compositions, each painting creates a bizarre yet beautiful realm where the commonplace intermingles with the subconscious.

Yesterday we brought you our first recap of Portland's second annual edition of Forest for the Trees, a new mural festival featuring 20 international and local artists. Today, we round up the rest of the murals. Philadelphia-based artist Nosego played with negative space for his piece, which sparkles on a small section of his giant wall with glowing contrasts. Nearby, Brendan Monroe and Souther Salazar collaborated almost seamlessly, blending whimsy with geometry and design. Paige Wright incorporated three-dimensional elements into her mural while Zach Yarrington opted to create text-based work. Take a look at the highlights after the jump.
Yis Goodwin, aka Nosego, offers a particularly colorful and celestial vision of the world in his illustrations of nature. Featured on our blog, in his latest paintings and murals, he depicts imaginary creatures and animals morphing into beautifully rendered landscapes. Nosego will next make his debut in Italy at Galleria Varsi with his latest offering, "Electric Breeze", opening on November 27th.
Culver City's Thinkspace Gallery is bringing their extensive roster of artists up north for the group show "LAX/SFO" at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco. The two galleries have shown side-by-side at multitudes of art fairs, including Scope Miami and the LA Art Show, and share a similar taste in figurative, illustrative work. Amy Sol, Casey Weldon, Esao Andrews and Jim Houser are included in the artist line-up, among dozens of others. Take a look at our sneak peek before the exhibition is unveiled at Hashimoto this weekend with two back-to-back opening receptions on October 31 and November 1.
As an artist whose illustrations have natural fluidity, it's no wonder that Kelly Vivanco found herself painting water in "Peculiar Tides". Her latest solo at Thinkspace gallery has a water theme, an element that has captured our imagination for centuries. Water is a source of life and vitality, doomed disasters, bold adventure stories and some of the world's most curious mysteries. Telling its story is an undertaking felt by Vivanco's roughly 40 paintings created over 8 months, sculptures, and a narrative starring childlike heroines that vaguely resemble the artist.
